Grass Fed Calf Deposits

This is the fourth time I have purchased products from Half Calf The meat whether it was beef or pork we purchased it is all been fantastic. The ease of doing business was easy and simple. I don’t believe you can go wrong buying Half Calf products.

Short review from first time buyer: Half Calf is a very legitimate and honest provider of excellent Texas beef. Owner Kameron is professional, courteous, and very responsive. The meat is far healthier and more delicious vs grocery store. That includes grass fed grocery beef.

Long review: Never bought beef this way or online before. Was aware some sellers have horrible reviews and are borderline fraudulent. Tried Omaha beef once, was awful. We were skeptical of spending $$$ for beef online, sight unseen, with the exact weight and cost not known upfront and a waiting period.

Bought quarter share of the Texas sized calf from Half Calf. The experience and cost were exactly what Kameron described on the website. Deposit paid on July 4th, Beef picked up on Aug 5th. All beef was professionally vacuum packed separately and already deep frozen. All cuts clearly labeled. Kameron personally helped me load my coolers. The other employees at the processor were all very friendly.

Approx 132 lbs of final weight beef in my freezer for our quarter share. Total cost for us, $1,440. About $10.60 / lb avg for all cuts/steaks etc.

Cheaper than comparable grass fed beef from grocery. Half Calf whole/half/quarter prices are also cheaper vs grocery grain fed steaks, which are inferior in quality.

As of Aug 2026, feedlot, grain-fed (no grass) ribeye steak at HEB is usually around $14.99 - $17.99/lb. Grass fed ribeye at HEB is usually $29.99/lb. Half Calf pricing is better for superior beef.

Yes, HEB grain-fed ground beef is cheaper, usually around $5/lb. However, HEB grass fed ground beef is usually near $10/lb. Again, the quality is lesser too.

Some additional factors: USDA allows beef to be labeled "grass fed" as long as animal was eating grass at harvest time, possibly a few months prior. Even three full months on grass is only about 10% of its life as a calf. True pasture beef is raised on grasses almost all of its life. More beneficial nutrients and better tasting. Not raised on a disgusting feedlot overseas.

Grass fed beef label from groceries doesn't usually mean it was also pasture raised. They may have had a short term grass/hay diet while cooped up with 100s of other cattle in stalls, all living, eating and standing in there own muck. Not cattle peacefully grazing a pasture.

Our beef is very dark and indicative of an animal that ate primarily grass during it's life. Not an animal that had grass only at the end of its life. Pink grocery store beef looks almost sickly by comparison.

Also, a single pound of grocery store ground beef may contain meat from dozens or even hundreds of individual cows. That's why ground beef recalls are prevalent. Half Calf ground beef is single animal.

We've tried burgers, tacos, meatballs in pasta, chuck roast, sirloins, sirloin bavette and NY strip so far. All were excellent! A noticeable improvement vs grocery. Can't wait to cook the rest.

Steaks were beefier and more buttery. Also noticed left overs tasted better. Raw ground beef doesn't have that loud raw bloody odor that even "fresh" ground beef from grocery has.

We're very happy with our order. Some ppl are nervous about buying beef without the final price or weight being known until after harvest and processing. Just remember, you don't know the final weight and price of your fresh fruits and veggies at the store until you pick them out weigh them. Even comparable sized pieces weigh slightly different each time.

That's why I'm suspicious of beef sellers who offer quarter shares that weigh exactly 100 lbs each time. Was the 100 lbs truly a quarter of the total beef? How can all cows weigh exactly the same each time?

Some of these sellers advertise cheaper prices, but don't include processing and packing. They add those expensive fees later. Those places nearly always had higher total prices during my research. The marketing is a gimmick.

Likewise, just trust the process with Half Calf. Rest assured they are not manipulating the process, it's all straight forward.

Lastly, Half Calf may have another distinct advantage over other sellers, even in Texas. That's their location. The Texas Hill Country is also wine country for a reason - climate. The area has higher elevation, more rain, and cooler temps vs many of us in TX. Better for pasture grasses and less heat stress for the cattle. Usually 10° cooler there in summer vs where I live, about two hours south.

We'll be back to Half Calf soon for a half or whole calf next time!! I think you'll be happy too if you give them a try.
